After learning about the Document Object Model (DOM), the next important concept in JavaScript is events. Events allow a website to react to user actions such as clicking buttons, typing in forms, or moving the mouse.

Events are what make websites interactive. Without events, a webpage would only display information without responding to the user.

What is a JavaScript Event?

A JavaScript event is an action that occurs in the browser. This action can be triggered by the user or by the browser itself.

Common JavaScript events include:

  • Clicking a button
  • Typing in an input field
  • Moving the mouse
  • Submitting a form
  • Loading a webpage

Example: Click Event

One of the most common events is the click event. Here is a simple example:

When the user clicks the button, JavaScript will run the function and display a message.

What is the DOM?

The Document Object Model represents the structure of an HTML document as a tree of objects. Each HTML element becomes an object that JavaScript can access and manipulate.

For example, a simple HTML structure like this:

Can be accessed using JavaScript like this:

document.getElementById("title")

This means JavaScript can find the element with the ID "title" and modify it.

Changing Text with JavaScript

One simple DOM manipulation example is changing the text of an element.

When the page loads, JavaScript will change the text from Hello World to Welcome to My Website.

Building My First Website Project

After learning the basics of HTML, CSS, UI design, UX design, and responsive web design, I decided to start my first small website project.

Building a real project is one of the best ways to improve coding skills. Instead of only studying theory, creating a project helps turn knowledge into practical experience.

Planning the Website

Before starting to write code, I first planned the structure of the website. Planning helps organize the layout and decide what kind of content will appear on the website.

For my first project, I decided to build a simple personal webpage that includes the following sections:

  • Header with the website title
  • Navigation menu
  • Main content section
  • About section
  • Footer

Basic HTML Layout

The structure of my webpage started with a basic HTML layout like this:

Why Responsive Design is Important

If a website is not responsive, users on mobile devices may have difficulty reading text, clicking buttons, or navigating the website.

A responsive design improves accessibility and creates a better experience for users across different devices.

Basic Techniques in Responsive Design

There are several techniques developers use to create responsive websites.

  • Flexible layouts using CSS
  • Media queries for different screen sizes
  • Responsive images
  • Mobile-friendly navigation menus
